PART II- ACTIVE READINGTo be an active reader one must read with intent. That means, in order to understand the material you should be highlighting, questioning, connecting and jotting down ideas AS YOU READ. In this case, you will be better able to comprehend the reading and your assignments. Jotting ideas down as you read means that you are formulating your own ideas as they relate to the assignment , our lectures, lessons and fishbowls. You can draw connections as you go. You can write in the book/ on the article (highlight) or use post-it notes. It is up to you.  Active Reading truly aided me in the writing process when I was both an undergraduate and graduate student! I still actively read today!

Answer the following in YOUR NOTE BOOK- 2-3 paragraphs
Two Names, Two Worlds by Rodriguez

What is the author's purpose for writing this poem? Interpret the title of the poem. What do you suppose it means? Can a name represent two worlds? Who is Rodriguez's audience?
Rodriguez says " Im from the struggle for broken dreams, of false promises, of houses with white picket fences And 2.5 kids." In essence, what can we infer he means by this? Can these ideas be applied to anything you heard about , read about or recently learned?

Ralph Ellison said " Through our name we place ourselves in the world." What do you think he means by that? Evaluate this quote in one paragraph

The Meanings of a Word by Gloria Naylor

Answer the following questions in YOUR NOTE BOOK

( Total 2 Paragraphs- IN YOUR NOTEBOOK) Discuss  the author's purpose for writing this essay? What ideas (if any) is the author trying to communicate? Provide two significant arguments Naylor makes in her essay and choose one to either agree or disagree with. 

Does the author use Imagery ( vivid words that create a portrait in the reader's mind) in to communicate a particular theme to the audience? Provide one theme with one concrete example and quote to support the theme.
