A Note To My Students- How I became the " Happy Professor at Farmingdale"

NOTE TO MY STUDENTS…  BEFORE YOU GET STARTED TODAY..

There is a plethora of research in the  last decade in the study of “Happiness”  The concept of happiness thrives in so many arenas including “The Science Of Happiness” and  what is now called positive thinking or positive psychology. .  Psychological research is carving a pathway into a thought process termed POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY - words used to describe perspective, mindset, grit (perseverance  and inner determination)  and optimism in the field of psychology.. This has had an impact on the recent study of human behavior and inspired me to LEARN more about the research so that I can TEACH IT! I began my own journey in 2017 when I picked up Time Magazine's Special Edition Titled " Happiness" ! It sat on my coffee table for years.. and then.. in 2023 I decided I had work to do in the classroom!

This semester we will explore a variety of facets as they relate to the self and our happiness.  We will read and write about The Great Arenas: beginning with :The Stoics ( Meaning & Purpose),  PERMA as it relates to the field of Positive Psychology in our discovery of Happiness, Genetics & Personality Traits, Explanatory Styles, Optimism as it relates to our experiences in Education (Grit & Perseverance), Relationships: Love, Friendship and Happiness, Generosity: Service and Philanthropy , Money: Careers , Exercise and Laughter as it relates to happiness. Topics that have intrigued me beyond the expected and continue to fuel my passion for research and teaching the subject.

WHAT WILL WE Research & Write About?

The Stoics, PERMA (Love, Friendship , Relationships, Education and Career Path as it relates to OUR Happiness and connect it to our understanding of the Self. My students will define Happiness. My desire to know more about happiness  began in 2016 with Shawn Achor;  also known as “ The Happy Professor”.  I implement this diagnostic essay (article) as a gateway into so much of where the research points in our understanding of how to LEAD HAPPY LIVES …  My passion for this inquiry began with Achor and continued to Arthur Brookes, Dan Gilbert and many more..

Here I am in 2025; I am compelled to further develop my inquiry in the study of happiness and to teach it. I am  known as the “Happy Professor” here at Farmingdale and I am grateful  to be on a journey this semester with all of you!
