Study Abroad – Spring Break 2016
HIS 305: Culture and Technology in England
(cross-listed with STS 400w – Seminar in Science, Technology and Society)
17 March – 27 March 2016
Co-taught by Dr. Robert A. Saunders (STS/HPS) and Dr. Jeff Gaab (HPS)















Students will visit Leeds, York, Sheffield and Manchester in England’s industrial heartland of Yorkshire before heading to London for three days in one of the world’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities. In-country experiential learning activities include: Leeds city and Kirkstall Abbey tours, York Minster andJorvik Viking Centre, Manchester’s Museum of Science and Technology and Old Trafford (Manchester United’s stadium), Sheffield’s museums of the Industrial Revolutionthe Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, a Thames River cruise, Greenwich Observatory, and the Jack the Ripper walking tour.

Students will register for HIS 305, Culture and Technology in England for the 2016 spring semester. Preliminary coursework will be done online during February and early March. Students will need to attend at least one orientation session and participate in one additional course activity. NOTE: The STS 400w course satisfies the capstone requirement for the Science, Technology and Society program and is open to all STS students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher (students need not be in their senior year to register for this section of STS 400W). Interested students in other programs should enquire about the possibility of taking the course as HIS 305 – Culture and Technology in England, which satisfies the campus requirements for Upper Division courses in-residency).
